We use technology to facilitate every aspect of our lives, from communication and travel to cooking and cleaning. Not only is technology the most frequently cited method of acquiring information, but it is also the most effective means of disseminating it. As such, technology has stimulated massive innovation in almost every industry, but least of all within higher education.

What the future holds

There has been a notable reluctance to adopt new technologies within many higher education institutions with justification varying from an unwillingness to provide students with further distractions, lack of professor proficiency in technology, and even a lack of institutional funding. However, education technology at the K-12 level is becoming increasingly prevalent, meaning higher education institutions will be forced to adapt to incoming students with even higher levels of technical proficiency than current generations.

Does a paradox exist here, where technologically conversant students are entering institutions that are pervasively cautious towards the adoption of new technologies? What exactly lies in store for education technology within the higher education system and where do we stand today?
